Independence Day: Celebrating 243 Years of Freedom

On July 4, 1776, the Declaration of Independence was finalized, setting forth a revolutionary precedent that “all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.” This notion that men and women receive rights directly from God rather than through despotic intermediaries promoted the idea of a government created by the people, for the people that has stood the tests of time and tribulation.

Today, as we celebrate our freedoms and liberties with fireworks, parades, festivities, family, and friends, the Utah Attorney General’s Office invites you to join us in remembering those who fought for our independence and self-government: our Founding Fathers and those in our militaries, and their families. Let us honor those who gave the ultimate sacrifice to keep our homes, families, and communities safe and free.

God bless the United States of America. God bless the great State of Utah, and each of you and your families. It is our privilege in the AG’s Office to protect and serve. Please be extra cautious and careful on the roads this holiday weekend.

“Each year, I look forward to Independence Day and am reminded of our nation’s humble, spiritual roots. Our Republic’s founders came from diverse backgrounds and origins. And despite their differences, they united to build a legacy of liberty and freedom that has stood the test of time. As we celebrate Independence Day—with fireworks, parades, and backyard barbeques—I pray we will appreciate the God-given blessings of liberty and opportunity that have made America a shining city on a hill; a light to inspire the oppressed and attract immigrants who have in turn enriched our culture and our country.  

“May we also honor those who have sacrificed and served, and those who continue to serve at home and abroad, to preserve our liberty and prosperity. This includes our men and women of the military along with law enforcement and first responders. We always owe a debt to those who confront danger to allow us to live in peace and security.

“As we celebrate on this extended weekend, please be careful, responsible and patient, particularly on the roads. 

“God bless America.” 

Attorney General’s Independence Day Statement

SALT LAKE CITY July 2, 2016 – Utah Attorney General Sean Reyes released the following statement for Independence Day:

“As we celebrate Independence Day, I am profoundly grateful for our nation’s humble, spiritual roots and admire the courage and inspiration of our founding mothers and fathers. I pray that the freedoms for which we have fought before, during and since 1776 will continue to shine ‘from sea to shining sea.’ Let us never forget the blessings brought to us in our diversity and unity and the liberties that make prosperity possible. Please join me in honoring all who have sacrificed, at home and abroad, for our safety and peace. God bless America.
“As we enjoy this weekend with family and friends, please celebrate and travel safely.”
