Law Enforcement Appreciation Day

Today in honor of Law Enforcement Appreciation Day, we at the Utah Attorney General’s Office express our gratitude and support of the public servants who have chosen to put their lives on the line every day to keep our communities and families safe.

There are approximately 17,985 U.S. police agencies in the United States which include City Police Departments, County Sheriff’s Offices, State Police/Highway Patrol and Federal Law Enforcement Agencies. Each of these local, state, and federal members of law enforcement often perform demanding, thankless work that takes them away from their families. Officers often respond to and witness some of the most tragic events in our communities such as murder, suicide, and domestic violence. We are grateful for the dedication and hard work performed by these officers, that has lasting, positive impacts in our communities.

To all the men and women in uniform who selflessly sacrifice their time to protect and serve – thank you.

Weapons, Drugs, Cash, Phony Social Security Cards Seized in SECURE Case

WEAPONS, DRUGS, CASH, PHONY SOCIAL SECURITY CARDS SEIZED IN SECURE CASE
Three Charged in Investigations Led by Utah AG’s Office
  

SALT LAKE CITY – This week, the Utah Attorney General’s SECURE Strike Force successfully executed a search warrant and arrested and charged three men with the felonies listed below. (The focus of the SECURE Strike Force is to investigate major crimes committed by or against people who are present in the United States without legal documentation).
 
The case centers on 32-year-old Eduardo Romo-Vazquez, who faces the bulk of the drug, weapons, stolen goods and fraud charges. Vazquez possesses a “U Visa”, which is a temporary visa and does not allow him to possess firearms. Two of the firearms in his possession were stolen rifles. He will face deportation when/if he is convicted.
 
Also charged are his brothers, Emmanuel and Juan Pablo, who are facing fraud charges and will be deported as soon as possible.
 
SECURE investigators acted on a tip from a concerned citizen about potential legal activity at a home in Magna. During the course of the two-month investigation, undercover officers confirmed the activities, built the case and arrested the suspects without incident.
 
Charged are:
Eduardo Romo Vazquez, (DOB 2/13/87): 16 Felonies including drugs and weapons charges: 2 counts of possession of a controlled substance with intent to distribute (2nd degree felony); 9 counts of Possession of a forged writing-phony social security cards, (3rd degree felony); 3 counts of possession of a firearm by a restricted person, (2nd degree felony); 2 counts of receiving stolen property. (2nd degree felony).
 
Two other subjects were also arrested:
Emmanuel Romo-Vazquez, DOB not available: 5 counts of possession of fraudulent documents, (possession of a false writing), 3rd degree felony.
 
Juan Pablo Romo-Vazquez, DOB not available: 2 counts of possession of fraudulent documents, (possession of a false writing), 3rd degree felony.

Weber County Missing Person Identified with Rapid DNA Analysis

WEBER COUNTY MISSING PERSON IDENTIFIED WITH RAPID DNA ANALYSIS

OGDEN — The identity of a Weber County man has been confirmed through Rapid DNA Analysis from remains discovered 10 months after he was reported missing by his family.

On March 17, 2019 hikers at the Ogden Nature Center reported bones they had discovered on the mountainside. The bones were found to belong to a human adult.

Rapid DNA Analysis of samples obtained from the bone confirmed the identity as 29-year-old Mark Myres of Ogden, who had been missing since May 4, 2018. The cause of death is unknown.

“The Weber County Sheriff’s Department and the AG’s Office are pleased that the use of the Rapid DNA technology is able to provide answers to Mr. Myres’ family,” said Special Agent Nate Mutter. “We’d like to express our condolences for their loss.”

Rapid DNA testing was first used by the Utah Attorney General’s Office in 2018. About the size of a printer, this technology allows law enforcement to analyze evidence on the crime scene and deliver results within a couple of hours. This timing is significantly shorter than the typical turnaround time often needed for DNA analysis.

Since its integration into the Attorney General’s Office, Rapid DNA has helped solve a myriad of cases.
